Aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, is a natural phenomenon that occurs when charged particles from the sun collide with the Earth’s magnetic field, creating colorful and mesmerizing light displays in the night sky. The lights can vary in color from green to pink to purple and are most commonly seen in high-latitude regions.
The images below were all taken in northern Minnesota. If you come to Minnesota and want to increase your chances of seeing the aurora borealis, it’s best to plan your trip during the fall, winter, or early spring when the nights are longer and darker. And choose a location with minimal to no light pollution. Keep in mind that while the aurora borealis is a natural phenomenon, it is not guaranteed that you will see it on any given night. However, with some planning and a bit of luck, you may be able to witness this beautiful and awe-inspiring display in the night sky.
