Castle Danger Peregrine Banding – June 2025

On June 18, 2025, biologists banded two peregrine falcon chicks at the Castle Danger nest site. The eyrie, located on a ledge near the water that had not been used in several years, held three chicks—two were banded, while a third died in the carrier and was returned to the nest.

The chicks included a 21-day-old female weighing 750 grams and an 18-day-old male weighing 586 grams. The adult pair at the site are both banded: a male with band number black over blue R/15 (Ringo – banded in 2018 in Wisconsin) and a female with black over red 18/U (Ariel – banded in 2011 in Minneapolis, MN). Ariel has nested in this location in 2016, 2017, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.

Banding provides biologists with critical data on survival, dispersal, and breeding, helping to track the health of peregrine populations along Lake Superior.

**Birds were handled for the purpose of scientific research under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U. S. Geological Survey and in accordance with all state permitting requirements.
